Doing the Necessary Work

An Event Apart stands with everyone protesting police brutality and racism, as we always will with people of conscience who want to see the world made better.

There is much work to do, and some of it is in our own house. People have pointed out that our pool of upcoming speakers is overwhelmingly white. Those people are right. We’ve allowed that to happen, should not have, and will do better. We owe it to ourselves and to the community to present a wide range of perspectives, and it’s clear we haven’t looked as widely as we could or should. That is on us, not our speakers.

It will take some time for this to be redressed. While events in the street unfold in days or even hours, event planning happens over months and sometimes years. We’ve asked for help from people who can help us, and are beyond grateful that they’re willing to provide that help. And we’re thinking through ways we can make a positive difference beyond the immediately visible.

To those who cared enough to be forthright with us: thank you. To those who are helping us to do better: thank you. To all those who work every day to make the world a better place for everyone: thank you.
